Connect to a VM

Console

The main way of accessing the VM is the console offered in Cloudstack, it is independent of operating systems or network problems.

To use it select Instances in the left column, choose the Instance desired and push the console button in the tool bar:

Networking in Cloudstack

Introduction

When a network is created inside Cloudstack two things are created: a vlan is created to isolate this network from the other user's and a virtual router is also created to be the gateway to other networks, to be a firewall and to offer the

Snapshots are instantaneous captures of a VM disk in a particular moment in time. They can be done manually or automatically and periodically using a set of rules.

Snapshot management is done in the “Storage” screen:

Create a template

Introduction

A template is a reusable configuration of a VM. It's a virtual disk image that has an operating system already installed and configured.

Users can create templates from a VM, from a snapshot of a disk or from VHD that come from other systems.

Since the update of august 2017 it is possible to choose a custom size for the root disk or resize an existing disk, but before that extra space can be used it has to be manually assigned in the operating system.
The Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 templates have the root partition mounted over LVM, using a logical partition of DOS type. Even though this guide is written for those templates it is advisable no to skip the

Extend VM's LVM with a new disk

Virtual machines created from templates usually have their file systems mounted over LVM. This allows to add more disks and to extend directly the / filesystem.

Disk management

Introduction

Virtual machines in Cloudstack have two types of disks:

	* root disk: first disk when the VM is created, holds the operating system and there is always just one. Templates only have “root disk”.
	* data disk: disks to have additional space. They can be freely added and removed and even exchanged between VM.

Projects

Introduction

Several users in Cloudstack can group in a team so they can collaborate sharing virtual resources an VMs, snapshots, templates, etc. In Cloudstack this is done creating a project.

When a user creates a project becomes its administrator and can invite other users to take part on it. All members of a project can see and manage all virtual resources created by any other member. A user can be part of any number of projects.

Before starting

Some important considerations before using the cloud. Please read carefully.

	* If the virtual machine is going to be commissioned create it inside of a project so other people can manage it when you are gone. Virtual machines owned by expired accounts not inside projects will be erased.
