Maker Lab

The Maker Lab is a shared-use space whose purpose is to make tangible ideas that require creating and building physical objects, with appropriate safety measures, using the tools and adapted workstations provided.

This space includes several fixed and mobile workbenches, a variety of workshop tools (such as screwdrivers, pliers, files, saws…), electronics and hardware consumables (screws, nuts, cables, small electronic components, Arduinos…), specialized machinery (filament 3D printers, CNC milling machine…) and the protective equipment necessary for their use.

To use the Maker Lab, you must have authorized access to the space.

Before requesting access, you must read the rules of conduct and safety indicated on this page. Use of the Maker Lab implies compliance with them.

To request access, contact citius.tic@usc.es and also indicate, if necessary, which of the following authorizations you need.

Authorization to use specialized machinery

Access to the Maker Lab does not automatically authorize the use of all available machinery.

Certain machines require prior authorization, which is obtained after completing basic training on their use and safety rules.

There are three authorization categories:
3D Printers → Allows use of the 3D printers.
StepCraft M.500 (CNC Milling) → Allows use of the StepCraft M.500 CNC milling machine.
Bambu Lab H2D (cut/laser) → Allows use of the cutting and engraving laser module of the Bambu Lab H2D.

Trainings are organized with the applicant according to the availability of support units. Once the training has been completed, the authorization will be recorded and can be consulted in Xici as a new available service.

It is also possible to avoid any of these authorizations by presenting a responsible declaration that certifies having the necessary knowledge for the safe use of the machinery for which access is requested.

Regulations

Rules of conduct

  1. It is necessary to join the Maker Lab Telegram group to facilitate coordination.
  2. Only authorized persons may access the space. Authorized persons can consult it in Xici in the researcher’s active services section.
  3. Materials and facilities must be used following the safety rules and the instructions linked on this wiki and on the signs placed in the workspace itself.
  4. Tools and consumable materials have an assigned place that is properly labeled. After using them, you must return them to their place.
  5. Tools are for exclusive use within the Maker Lab facilities. If there is a good reason to take any tool out of there, it must be notified in the corresponding Telegram thread.
  6. If you find damaged material, misplaced, or notice that something is missing, it must be reported in the corresponding Telegram thread, with photos if relevant.
  7. Work surfaces must be kept clear as much as possible. Maker Lab users can be assigned a cubicle in the Project Cabinet (cabinet no. 3) to leave their things.
  8. It is necessary to make a prior reservation for tools classified as specialized machinery (3D printers, CNC, etc.) using the reservation application.
  9. When the Virtual Studio is reserved, it will not be possible to use tools that emit noise or vibrations, and the description of the Virtual Studio reservation should be checked in case it has any special requirements in this regard.
  10. In the event of a significant revision of the rules of conduct, they must be accepted again. All interested persons will be notified with sufficient advance notice.

Safety rules

  1. The Maker Lab has common-use safety glasses, work clothing and safety gloves, as well as disposable gloves, hair covers and footwear.
  2. Regular users can request individual-use safety glasses, work clothing or safety gloves by writing to citius.tic@usc.es . This material must be stored in the Safety Cabinet (under the screen) properly labeled.
  3. Tools must be used following the manufacturer's safety instructions, the instructions linked on this wiki and the signs displayed in the workspace itself.
  4. Tools classified as specialized machinery (3D printers, CNC, etc.) require a specific authorization before they can be used, due to the complexity of their use and their safety rules. You can check whether you are authorized by reviewing Xici in the researcher’s active services section to see if you have the corresponding authorization.
  5. In the event of a significant revision of the safety rules, they must be accepted again.

Specialized machinery

The use of specialized machinery requires having the corresponding authorization indicated in the Access request section. In addition, each time it is used a prior reservation must be made in the reservation application.

(The H2D and H2D Pro manuals share most of the content, although the information in the H2D manual and wiki is more extensive.)
