===== Description of the service =====

Remote power-on of computers via the web.

With this service, you do not need to leave your computer on if you think you might need to use it at night, on the weekend or while away.

<note important>For the power-on system to work the computer must have **Wake on lan** enabled. Many of the computers managed by the IT Infrastructure Management Unit already have it enabled, but we recommend testing whether it works the first time. In case of a power outage, Wake on lan may not work properly until the computer is started manually once.</note>

===== User manual =====

A list of the computers you are allowed to shut down or power on will appear, together with their current status. The computers that will appear are your own computer (maximum one computer per socket), and the servers that have automatic shutdown, can be powered on via this system and to which you have been granted access.

Depending on the status of each computer, you can power on or shut down the computer:

  * Off indicator (gray): The computer is off; you can power it on by pressing the button. There is no way to detect whether the computer powers on correctly until it boots, so the application will wait one minute before trying again to check the computer's status, and then will re-query it. If the computer remains off (gray) the computer likely has Wake on Lan disabled in the BIOS or in the network card.
  * On indicator (solid blue): The computer is on; you can shut it down by pressing the button. Only CITIUS systems running Ubuntu 18.04 can be shut down through this system. Other computers will receive an error when attempting to shut them down. Servers with automatic shutdown cannot be shut down manually, and the button will appear grayed out.
  * Busy indicator (blue in motion): The computer is being powered on or off at that moment, and you cannot do anything. The indicator will remain in this state for one and a half minutes after powering on or off the computer.

<note important>Shutdown is only supported on systems running the **CiTIUS Ubuntu**.</note>

Press the ''Logout'' button to log out of the application.

  * Recognizes the login from the center's main page http://citius.usc.es/, so that if you are logged in there you do not need to log in again.

  * If the computer cannot be shut down or powered on, it does not appear in the list.
  * If the computer cannot be shut down, the shutdown button does not appear.
  * If the computer cannot be powered on, the power-on button does not appear.

===== Frequently asked questions =====

==== After pressing the power-on button, the blue moving indicator appears and then it returns to the off indicator ====
This can be due to several causes:
  * The computer is stuck in some boot sequence (BIOS, Grub menu, etc.) and requires manual intervention.
  * The computer is not connected to the network.
  * The computer is not correctly configured for Wake on lan. This can happen the first time you try the tool. Notify the IT Infrastructure Management Unit at [[citius.tic@usc.es]] so they can take a look at your computer's configuration.

==== After pressing the power-on button, the blue moving indicator appears, then it returns to the off indicator for a few seconds and then the on indicator appears ====
The system has no way of checking whether the computer is actually powering on, so after sending the power-on signal it waits one and a half minutes before showing the real status again. If after that minute and a half the computer still has not powered on but finishes later, it is possible that the indicator returns to the off state for a few seconds and, once the computer is on, the correct status will finally appear.

This may be because the system got stuck in some shutdown sequence and requires manual intervention.

==== The power-on/off button appears grayed out and I can't press it ====
Some computers cannot be shut down or powered on, and whether they are on or off the button will be disabled, depending on what actions are permitted.

==== My computer does not appear in the list of computers I can power on/off ====
Notify the IT Infrastructure Management Unit at [[citius.tic@usc.es]]. Computers are assigned manually and there may be an error.
